The nine circles of hell from Dante’s Inferno recreated in Lego by Mihai Mihu

I. LIMBO: A place of monotony, here the souls are punished to wander in restless existence while they moan helplessly in echoes between the ruins of a temple.

II. LUST: Surrounded by erotic representations, those overcome by lust are forced to watch and experience disgusting things, ultimately being condemned to drown in the menstrual river.

III. GLUTTONY: The circle itself is a living abomination, a hellish digestive system revealing horrific faces with mouths ready to devour the gluttons over and over for eternity.

IV. GREED: This pompous place is reserved for the punishment of the greedy ones.

V. ANGER: In this depressing place the souls are trapped in the swamp, they can’t move and they cannot manifest their frustration which is making them even more angry.

VI. HERESY: The giant demon watches closely over his fire pit, dwarfing the damned that are dragging the new arrivals in the boiling lava. Those who committed the greatest sins against God are getting a special treatment inside the temple where they are doomed to burn for eternity in the scorching flames.

VII. VIOLENCE: A place of intense torture where the horrific screams of the damned are eternally accompanied by the hellish beats of drums.

VIII. FRAUD: In Fraud the Demons enjoy altering the shape of souls, this is how they feed.

IX. TREACHERY: Lucifer lies here chained by the Angelic Seal which keeps him captive in the frozen environment.

This is absolutely amazing. Great visualizations.

We scry all the creases of their young lives for signals that might predict the horrors that would come. We learn what video games they played, what music they listened to, what they said to friends in private conversations, what they looked like in baby pictures, what their aunts and uncles thought of them. Once we had names and faces to blame for the tragedies in Boston, Newtown, and Aurora, the stories grew larger. This is why I was so struck by the way the faces of the Scott brothers [who shot into a crowd at a Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans, wounding 20 people] flashed by, essentially anonymous. It was as if we didn’t need to imagine why these men might have done this horrible thing. The story told itself: Just another gang-motivated shooting in a place where such things are too common, by two men who may as well be stereotypes. No baby pictures necessary.”

I am completely in love with the art direction of Hannibal, most especially as it deals with the food. Obviously, of course, you’re gonna do a show about Hannibal Lecter, you’re gonna have to do a lot of stuff with food, and it’s gonna be creepy.

But it is continually impressive to me that the show makes the food so simultaneously gorgeous and unnerving. It alone provides significant depth to Hannibal’s character, which is itself a remarkable feat of storytelling. Think about it: Hannibal Lecter’s character in Silence of the Lambs is stunningly frightening, and much of his freakiness comes from the combination of his ability to understand other humans while also being completely alien. His mind is incomprehensible; he is inhuman and also nearly omniscient.

Hannibal’s Dr. Lecter is much the same - he’s alien and discomfitingly perceptive. And yet, the presence of that gorgeous, gorgeous food, his absolute care for its preparation and presentation, the performance of it, and his obvious joy in its stunning virtuosity… I mean, that foie gras looks *delicious.* It almost make you sympathize with cannibalism.

Which is, of course, absolutely terrifying. And so much more affecting than if it were just, you know, “once again the horrible cannibal prepares a lady’s loin for his deplorable dinner.” And that has everything to do with how unbelievably beautiful these dishes are, how deeply unsettling and undeniably… appetizing.

Hannibal is VERY high on my list of Summer Catch Up Shows.

Really poorly constructed episodes like this are actually sort of fascinating. I can only imagine that senseless, random crime does indeed happen in the real world, and that creepy-looking husbands crop up much more rarely than SVU would generally suggest. And yet, when something like this happens in the context of fiction, it comes off as sloppy, bizarre, and implausible.

Narrative, man. Completely unrealistic things become plausible, while totally probable events are dramatically strange.

A little in love with this diagram for obvious reasons.
